How the real General Training Writing test works
60 minutes for two tasks. Spend about 20 minutes on the letter and 40 minutes on the essay, because the essay counts for twice as much.
Task 1 is a letter of at least 150 words. Cover every bullet point and use the right tone: formal for a manager or company, friendly for a friend.
Task 2 is an essay of at least 250 words. Answer the exact question, give your opinion clearly, and support each idea with a reason and an example.
You are marked on 4 things: answering the task, organising your ideas, range of vocabulary, and grammar. Each counts for a quarter of your band.
Writing fewer words than the minimum lowers your band. Writing far more does not raise it.
Leave 3 to 5 minutes to check spelling, full stops and capital letters.
