Complete K53 Learner's Test Guide (2026)
20 April 2026
The K53 learner's licence test is the first step to getting your driver's licence in South Africa. It is a written theory exam administered at driving licence testing centres (DLTCs) across all nine provinces. This guide covers everything you need to know to walk in prepared and walk out with a pass.
What Is the K53 System?
K53 is the standardised testing system used in South Africa for both the learner's licence (theory test) and the driver's licence (practical driving test). The name "K53" refers to the regulation document that governs the testing standards. It was introduced to ensure consistency across all testing centres nationally.
Test Structure
The Code 8 (light motor vehicle) learner's test consists of three sections. You must pass each section individually — scoring well in one section cannot compensate for failing another.
Section 1: Rules of the Road (8 questions)
This section tests your knowledge of traffic laws, regulations, and driving procedures. Topics include speed limits, right of way, overtaking rules, stopping distances, learner and driver obligations, and the National Road Traffic Act. You need at least 6 out of 8 correct (75%).
Section 2: Road Signs (28 questions)
The largest section tests your ability to identify and understand regulatory signs (red circles), warning signs (yellow diamonds), information signs (blue rectangles), temporary road works signs, and road markings. You need at least 22 out of 28 correct (78%).
Section 3: Vehicle Controls (28 questions)
This section covers dashboard warning lights, brake systems, clutch operation, mirror adjustment, tyre safety, headlight usage, and basic vehicle maintenance. You need at least 22 out of 28 correct (78%).
How to Book Your Test
Visit your nearest driving licence testing centre (DLTC) with your South African ID or valid passport and temporary ID. Complete the application form (DL1), pay the booking fee, pass the eye test, and receive your test date. Some centres allow online booking through the eNaTIS system.
What to Bring on Test Day
Bring your South African ID book or smart ID card, the booking receipt, and a pen. Arrive at least 30 minutes early. No cell phones, books, or notes are allowed in the testing room. The test is written on a mark-sense answer sheet (like a multiple-choice bubble sheet).
How Long Does the Test Take?
You are given approximately 60 minutes to complete all 64 questions. Most candidates finish in 30–40 minutes. There is no penalty for finishing early.
After the Test
Results are usually available within 1–2 hours. If you pass, you receive a temporary learner's licence that is valid for 24 months. Your permanent card is collected later. If you fail, you must wait at least 7 days before rebooking.
