What Documents Do You Need?
South African ID book or smart ID card (not a copy — the original). If you're a foreign national, you need a valid passport with a traffic register number. You'll also need to complete the DL1 application form (available at the DLTC). No photos are needed for the learner's test — photos are only required for the driving licence.
Hidden Costs to Budget For
The R140 fee covers the application, eye test, and written test. However, budget for transport to the DLTC (many are not in central locations), study materials (though our platform is free), and potentially an optometrist visit if your eyes aren't up to standard. If you fail and need to rebook, the full fee applies again.
How to Book
Most centres accept walk-ins, but queues can be very long — arrive before 7am. Some Gauteng and Western Cape centres offer online booking. Check your province's transport department website for the latest booking options. You can also call your nearest DLTC to check availability.
Save Money — Pass First Time
The biggest hidden cost is failing and paying R140 again (plus transport, time off work, etc.). The national first-time pass rate is estimated at 50-60%. Using our free practice tests can significantly improve your chances of passing on the first attempt.
