Job Interview Questions for Tradespeople in Australia (With Sample Answers)
The interview questions Australian employers ask tradespeople, with sample answers and tips for video interviews from overseas.
Australian employers hiring tradespeople from overseas usually interview by video. They want to know three things: can you do the job, will you work safely, and will you fit into the team. Here are the questions you are most likely to hear, with short sample answers you can adapt.
1. "Tell me about yourself."
Keep it to about one minute: your trade, years of experience, the kind of work you do best, and why you want this job.
2. "How do you make sure you work safely?"
Safety questions come up in almost every Australian trade interview. Give the steps you actually follow, not general words.
3. "Tell me about a time you solved a difficult problem."
Use the STAR method: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Choose a real job, and finish with a result you can measure.
4. "Tell me about a time you disagreed with a supervisor or workmate."
They are checking that you stay professional and solve problems by talking. Show that you listened, explained your view calmly and found a solution.
5. "Why do you want to work in Australia?"
Be honest and positive. Talk about the work, the standards and your career, not only the money. Show that you have thought about living there: the city, the climate, the distance from family.
6. "What tools and equipment are you experienced with?"
Name the brands, models and diagnostic equipment you know. If the job uses equipment you have not used, say what similar equipment you know and how quickly you learn.
7. "What questions do you have for us?"
Always ask one or two: "What does a normal week look like in this role?", "What equipment does your fleet run?", "How do new people get started on site?"
Tips for video interviews from overseas
- Test your internet, camera and microphone the day before.
- Sit in a quiet place with light in front of you, not behind you.
- Check the time difference: Perth, Brisbane and Sydney can all be on different times from South Africa and Zimbabwe.
- Dress as you would for an office interview.
- Speak a little slower than normal and keep your answers to about one to two minutes.
- Practise out loud beforehand: it makes the biggest difference.
